Every five years, the University of Maryland updates its Facilities Master Plan, and once every decade, the plan undergoes a major update. This year marks a major update.

Members of the Facilities Master Plan Steering Committee met with the College Park City Council last Tuesday night to present their preliminary ideas. The main areas of focus were the landscape master plan and transportation, as well as the school’s goal to be carbon neutral by 2050.Though this yearlong project is still being drafted, the anticipated cost has been set at $750,000 and the FMP Steering Committee has already brought in consultants to help formulate the new plan. The landscape architecture firm Oehme van Sweden, known for their work at the University of Virginia, is heading the project.

Chair of the FMP Steering Committee, J.Frank Brewer, said that they want this to be a transparent process in which the public will be given an opportunity to discuss the updates once the plan is further along.
